What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Self Portrait

My self portrait is based around the beauty of nature. Having an image of a pond at night signifies serenity and calmness that everybody needs in their life. I put a moon above the pond with my face as a child in it to represent the growth of youth in our culture today. So many protests and revolts are taking place in the world now because of technology and the strong minds of the youth. Putting my face on the moon, for me, suggests that the youth are getting into things that may have been around for so long, but are now just becoming of interest. I feel like the moon is one of the most peaceful objects in our culture. It is not terrorized by war, famine, politics, or any other human fault. It is always beyond our reach to inflict bad human nature upon it. It is never changing, at least in one’s life time, and it is always a constant in the night sky. Its ability to affect tides and forces so far away from it inspires me to go out and make a change, even if it is not felt immediately and where you can feel it.

Trial and error: I feel like the hardest part of this project was creating the moon, especially making it seem like its reflecting on the water.

  1. I like how you used a picture of you when you were younger. The moon is a very interesting aspect.
