What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Philosophical Statement

Each person has five valid senses, but there is a sixth that captures things not considered entirely concrete. Our senses allow us to gather information from our environment. That means ears for sound, eyes for sight, nose for scent, tongue for tasting and skin for touching. We use our intuition to draw energy or conclusion from the whole picture that our other senses draw. At this point in time, our senses are constantly being bombarded with bright, loud, strong, bold information speeds that our subconscious can barely keep up with. Our intuition can be manipulated by mass media. Advertisements form a daily battle that our senses are forced to fight. Pair that with the strains of living in a crowded and noisy urban area and its incredible for us to try and process it all. We are creatures of evolution> We adapt quickly and easily to new situations and the pressures of media and modern noise is no different. The human race is becoming desensitized. We find it comfortable at this point to live in a world where we see 500+ ads per day, a world where lights are always on, and the decibel level of white noise nears 30 in urban areas. Humans have adapted to tune out our over-stimulating environments. However, not everyone is so fortunate as to have adapted fully. Nina Channing
