Self-Portrait Artist Statement
I believe that within art not everything that is known by the artist must be known by the viewer. With that said, some things should be known as to inspire interpretations of what is not known.
The beach is a place I often visit to think, and the bluffs are a place I rarely visit to bring out emotions I often cannot predict. This picture is taken at the bluffs, representing the attempt I make to be able to control emotion and not let it fog my sight. My emotions often win, resulting either for the best or the worst. I used to jump down the bluffs and then climb back up when I was a kid, but they fenced it off. It seems that as you grow older, what was fun becomes restricted and it pushes you to, sometimes, break the rules to have some fun. I jumped over the fence and down the bluff I went. When I got there I drew in the sand FREE. The irony of freedom is something I think about a lot. If you are free you should not do anything to hurt anybody else, due to the fact you should not abuse what you are given. Although, no matter what you do, there will be somebody who disagrees with what it is you've done. When climbing back up the bluff, I came to the fence and realized I would have to jump or climb over it to get back to the top. There are consequences for your actions, and you have to remember that and keep it in mind when you make a choice.
