What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Self portrait (Sophie)

Artist Statement & self-portrait

My self-portrait represents my feelings at the moment. Sometimes I feel alone and I am very thoughtful.I think of my family and my friends in Germany, who I miss very much.
The background supposed to represent "confusion". Often many things confuse me and I don't really know what to do.
Likewise the background represents the many decisions I must make every day, and the various possibilities offered by one's life.
there is also a big contrast if you compare the background with me. I represent my thoughts and calmness, while the background represents bustling and quickness.
My portrait also expresses this image: The background stands for a crowd, which moves constantly around me and which stands for anxiety. I am sitting in the center of this crowd and feel lost. I also have the feeling that everything just passes me by and that I am simply overwhelmed at times; that nobody understands me.
In my portrait I can only poorly distinguished from the background, which means that I sometimes feel as though I were sinking into the crowd and that I don't even know myself. I feel like I want to break out of the crows and finally have time for myself.

At first it was difficult to take a picture of myself that represents my feelings. I took photos outside and inside without having the actual idea of what I want to do or represent.
All in all I had to think a lot till i finally took this self-portrait.
