What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Lily's Self Portrait

For my self portrait, I decided to take a picture of myself surrounded by water, wearing lace, and then photoshopping a map into the water. The water signifies cleansing, but it can also take on the negative metaphor of drowning, which is why I chose to put the map in the water. The map is a literal representation of the world and with the water it represents embracing the world and drowning in it, which can either be a good or a bad thing. I chose to wear really old lace in the photo because of how delicate it is, and a metaphor for history. I'm wearing the lace because it signifies how you will always be surrounded by history and you can never get rid of your own history no matter how much you may want to.

Trial and Error: Definitely the struggles I had with this portrait revolve around photoshop. I had difficulty figuring out how to change the opacity, and then making it not so contrasty. Getting the actual idea straight took 2 trials and a few hundred photos, but I'm happy with the end result. I couldn't decide which picture to use, so I used two that go together.
