Artist Statement: I’m from Taipei, Taiwan and I’m now studying in the U.S. Taiwan is just an island and it’s too small compare to other countries such as the U.S. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to study abroad. If I’m not born with a healthy body that have two legs and feet to walk, if I’m not born in a family that have enough money to send me out of my home country, if I’m not born in a peaceful and developed country like Taiwan, or even if I’m not born in this century that we can travel easily, I won’t be studying here at the U.S. I’m very glad to live in such a modern world. Things become more international and education should be geared to the needs of modernization, of the world and of the future. We should take the advantage of this time period that we’re living to travel and study around the world. We should not only study our home country, but also study other countries. Student should extend their learning to the world beyond their home country. I study abroad to expand my intellectual horizons and increase my knowledge by traveling with my feet. If we’re healthy and have the chance, we should take the opportunity to study around the world.
Trail and Error: The background is Taipei, Taiwan, where I was born and it shows Taipei is a developed city because it has Taipei 101, which is a building that has 101 floors, that needs high technology to build it. Sunshine represents the world outside. Top part of my body is back lighted because I need to fill it full by expanding my intellectual horizons and increasing my knowledge. My feet are highlighted because it shows that I travel with my healthy feet. In the middle, there’s a word mass and it’s about the world. I don’t really know how to use Photoshop, but I know someone who is really good at it. I learned a lot while doing this project. There are many layers and it’s not easy to make it looks natural. The hands, the legs, and the feet are not mine. The only part that’s me is the top of my body. I need to fix it so that it looks real. There was no sunset in the original picture of Taipei 101 and the sky wasn’t so bright. I changed the color to make it looks in a positive way. The feet were standing out because I made the floor darker; it’s more detail than other part of the picture. I want to show that it’s a pair of shoes from TOMS, which tell us there are other counties and other people that we should go visit and study. Top of my body faded into black, but the word “world” pop out. It took a while to have this effect. I did a lot of changing to make this picture show what I want it to show.
