What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

My collage is about the meaning of the life of a man, or just me. It contains the thinking, struggle, pursuit, and “success”. My project reveals my personal philosophy on my belief of simplicity, emptiness, and origin.

The pursuit of luxury is common in this society that we live in. But sometimes people don’t even know what’s behind the names of the expensive things that they would like to show off with. I put lots of big-name brand in the collage, but having the ones without color on the top, to show that the brands has lost their true values but just a name in this materialistic world.

Young men also chase for another thing, women. I put the dress of a woman without a head to show that it can be who ever that fits the dress, meaning good looking. Also with the diamond ring, the apartment, the Champaign, and even the puppies are all things a man would like to give a “realistic” woman, which the relationship stays on a physical and materialistic level.

The black and white picture of a person holding a camera taking a picture also contains a sarcastic meaning of guys trying hard for “attention”, which I used the color set to show it’s mostly meaningless.

The main body part of the man is well dressed with a bowtie, fake smile, and head as a penguin. It shows that sometimes, the truth is not shown on the outside layer, which people try to pretend they are someone else. To be cool or even cute, who knows?

The airplane and the supercar represented the pace of life is fast, when you think that you scored a touchdown (on the right); but as you look in the rear mirror, it’s all black and white. Most of the people think life should always be about pursuit for wealth and power, but lost the meaning of enjoyment and chance to fully experience their life. That’s why I always have the Buddha in the place closest to my heart so that I can calm down to question.

Thanks for reading

Hope that you enjoyed!
