What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

MY COLLAGE

My collage is about respecting people. You should respect people in many different ways. In each corner are black arrows, which show the directions you should see the collage. It begins on the right side on the top. Respecting people starts with simple things like hobbies. This idea represents my basketball and soccer ball. Every person has his or her own hobby for example playing basketball or playing soccer. We should respect every hobby, even if we don’t like it.

Another thing people should respect is the character of each person. Every character is different - and different doesn’t mean worse. You can see the picture with the headline “They Are Not You”. It shows many faces that look similar, except one person who doesn’t have a face. The picture says that you shouldn’t follow the majority and be who you are.
We should also respect who our friends are and who we love and like. Love should be a good thing and it just happens. Every person feels different and has different emotions and we should respect that in order to try to understand people or even to be able to help them. This idea represents my pictures on the bottom on the right side.
If you follow the arrows on the corners you now see a woman’s face, a black high heel and money. The woman and the high heel represent beauty. It should not matter how a person looks, whether he or she is skinny or a bit corpulent or whether he or she has a beautiful face or not. We should not judge people because of their look but because of their character.
The money says that we should not dislike people because they are poor; quite the contrary, because then we should try to help and support them.
Right next to those three images you can see a big question mark. The question mark represents this question: Should we really set that much value on money and on how a person looks? Money is not everything and you can’t buy with money the really important things.
Another big thing we should respect is the different religions. Just because we don’t believe in what others believe in doesn’t mean we cannot like them. You should always respect other religions. This represents the next three pictures (to the left): A woman with a headscarf, Jesus Christ and Buddha.
If we now continue following the arrows to the top of my collage we can see the symbols for male and female. They show that you should respect both male and female. Next to them you can see a red heart. It represents that you should also respect people loving the same sex.
Another big thing we all should respect are the different countries. Therefore I chose the world.
On the left side on the top of my collage you can see a picture where people demonstrate. This image shows that we should respect people’s opinions and that we all have a right to say our opinions out loud.
In the middle of my collage you can see two hands with different skin colors shaking. It means that everybody should respect the skin color of each person.
At last there is a big “peace” picture in the middle of my collage. Around it there are red arrows coming from every direction. This means that if we respect all those things, which I just mentioned, we could have a much better chance for peace in the whole world. If we can actually try to respect those things the final conclusion could be peace.
