What is Media Studies?

The Integrated Media Studies classes are mandatory, trimester, non-elective courses, grades 9-11 that are integrated into the cultural history curriculum. In all the Media Studies courses, students learn to deconstruct and construct media via collaborative and individual projects and activities, production, discussion, and written reflection. This is a double-period class.

Collage Project- Caitlin Cummings

Philosophical paragraph:

I want to live my life searching for my passion. When I find it ill know. My philosophy is that I don’t want to live my life doing something I’m not interested in. I don’t want to live somebody else’s dream. I want to live my own dream doing what I want to do. I don’t know what I want to do yet, and so my idea is to find that dream. I only have one life and I want to live it to its fullest. Everyone always asks me why I work so hard, why I have three jobs, why I am so motivated with my schoolwork. I think its because my passion is living. I don’t want to be standing on the sidelines. I want to have my own money, so I can do what I want to do. I don’t like having to be labeled as too young for anything. I plan on making the most of everything, and that’s how I’m going to live my life.

Artist statement:

My Collage is a city. This represents my philosophical statement in that I don’t want to be just one insignificant person in a city, I want to be the city and I believe that’s what motivates me. I also picked a city for my collage because in a city there are so many opportunities that it is impossible to do everything, even though I feel that sometimes that is my goal. By putting this “city” into a box like shape, it appears almost restrained, put inside my box because I’m in control of it. I choose the darker colors for my collage because I think it represents how dark and depressing being a “cog in the machine” would be for me. This feeling is also characterized by the stereotypical city cubical job, which I represent in my collage by the rows of square windows. I also think that a city is appropriate for a collage because little pieces are put together to make the whole image, like how many different people working together form a city, institution, community, ect. The city reflects my beliefs because my goal is not to be a (metaphoric) little piece of paper.
